Couple of things;
To add a smiley in the text just left click on the smiley to the right that you want to use and it will insert the code for it in the text box where ever your courser is at.
When you click on the smilies it will only post the "code" for it in the text area here, for instance the first smiley Very Happy

looks like this [:D] (without the brackets [] ) which is the colon and capital "D". You can actually just type these in when your typing once you figure them out but just easy to click on them and then it enters the code where the courser is in the text field here.
Then if you hit the "Preview" button below you will see how it outputs the text with the active smiley.
Here is a screen shot of part of what I did here, you can see the Smilies on the right like thins on your computer right?
If not, do you see on this where it says "Smilies are ON" at the lower right or does yours say OFF
