Suggestions for overdrive tranny

Post by chad30021 »

Hey everyone, I have an FE 390 with the stock ratio c6 tranny and I want to know if anyone had any experience on switching out the c6 for a more freeway worthy 4 or 5 speed automatic. I I know not many transmissions have an FE bolt pattern but if I could get your input or what you used in the conversion I would really appreciate it.

Here is my experience with gearing in a 1972 F-250 with a stock 360. I switched the rear end to the tallest they had in that year, I believe the gears to be 3:56. At that time I had small tires on the truck, in the range of 225x16". I don't remember the rest of the tire size. I then changed the rear tires to 265x75x16 and there was quite a difference. On hills I have lost the ability to accelerate that I have before. I would say that one size smaller on the tires would have been a better choice. This experience is somewhat tainted by the fact that the engine is tired. When I replace it I plan to use a stock 390 for a little more torque which I assume will help the acceleration. Just thought you might be able to use this info.
