Not Ford but transmission

Post by hotrod ford »

One of the guys I work with has a Jeep with a chebie 350 and turbo 300 tranny. He ran it into a deep mud hole about two weeks ago and now it will not shift out of 1st. He can shift it manually but it will not on it's own. He thought it might have been the modulator but I think have water got into the tranny, and now needs rebuilt. Any suggestions?

Drain the water out of that Turbo 350 A.S.A.P. Automatic transmissions won't run if there's water/mud in them.

Was there any external damage done to the trans? Hit any rocks or such? Was the pan damaged? Were the cooler lines pinched shut? Did the vacuum modulator line get pulled off?

Theses are the things I'd do and look for.

No visible damage. We changed the filter and modulator and vacumn line. There was some water in the pan. I was reading about this transmission having a governer on it. We will have a look at it tomorrow afternoon. Article said it is plastic and easy to break.

Sounds like the governor is hung up. Pull the large clip off of the round cover that is on the left side rear of the trans. Pull the governor out and make sure the valve inside is moving freely, also check the teeth on the plastic gear.

The governor on a 300 transmission is behind a cover held on with 3 bolts.

I doubt that it is a Super Turbine 300, as these have not been used in years..
It is a 350 or 400? Which? Where is the modulator? on the side or in the rear?
Either way if the H2o & trans fluid have blended into a mix that looks like a strawberry milkshake, it only takes a few miles of driving for this to happen until it releases the glue that bonds the clutch friction material to the metal clutch core-- & you will have a rebuild on your hands.
Others have given you good advice: modulator hose, gov gear & pan drop.
Note: 350 & 400 gov gears are cut diff & will not interchange...
If you have "milkshake fluid" clean & flush & if the tranny gods are with you your unit MAY survive..........Good Luck...........Donnie

thanks for the advice. Like I said, this belongs to a buddy. He said it is a chevy 350 and a 300 transmission. It is installed into a Jeep. I looked at it before I went to work this morning and saw that it is held on by a big clip ring. A puc on the net shows that it has a gear and some rings on it. I will take it out later on this evening to see if it broken or gummed up.
