I did this swap, but mine originally had the c6 trans, so I already had the column shifter. I got my AOD from a 93 F150 2 wheel drive. The 92 and 93 F150 with 302 v8 had the strongest factory aod. Avoid like the plague all AOD's that came from a v6 car. V8 car like a crown vic is next best, then better still is the aod that came from a mustang gt, but as I said the best will be out of a 92-93 E or F 150 that came with a 302. Pre 1988 AOD had poor tailshaft oiling, so best to go with 88 or newer.

So I would ask you what is your aod out of?

The next thing is yes all AOD's from 1980-93 will fit your 6 cyl. You can go to napa and get a flex plate from a 1985 F150 that had a 300 straight 6/aod combo.
Another very important thing is you will need the Throttle valve cable or rod setup depending on what year the transmission is. Also get the torque converter. More than likely you will need the starter from the 85 F150 with 300 and aod combo due to tooth differences is your fly wheel and the new flex plate.

When I did my swap it was very easy because I have a 4 barrel carburetor on my 300, Aftermarket makes linkage correctors and adaptors for 4 barrel and 2 barrel carbs, not stock 1 barrel carbs. So if you have your 1 barrel carb you will need to get the throttle valve linkage rod from an 85 F150 with AOD. It is very very crucial that this is set up 100% perfect or you will fry the transmission in a matter of miles since it regulates line pressure in the transmission.

You can recognise trucks that came with aod's because the shift pattern is P R N OD D 1.

Your drive shaft will need to be shortened. You may need to get a trans cross member from a 2 wheel drive bumpside that came with an auto.

Another option if you want to keep your stock steering column with no shifter is you can go to Lokar and get an after market floor shifter for it. If you can't use your slip yoke, go to Jegs or Summit racing and get the ford racing slip yoke for the AOD.

Hope that helps some, that's all I could think of off the top of my head.
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.
