Leave the old paint or sand and respray?

Post by Canonman67 »

I'm doing the interior of my '70 flareside, some rust repair, relocating the gas tank and a few other patches where the PO cut holes. For the most part the paint is in good shape and I'm wondering if I should just leave it, scuff and spray over it or would it better to take the whole thing down to bare metal and start over? I'm not doing a total restoration just some repairs and upgrades. Thanks for any help.

I think i would do a sample of buffing somewhere on the truck. Might be surprised how it turns out.

I've thought about that on the exterior but the interior is going to have too many patches and other bare spots where I've removed rust to get away with it. As I look at the subject line I see where I didn't define my issues properly. I'm wondering if it's better to simply scuff the old paint and go from there or to start over with bare metal on the whole interior.

Unless you're going for a pristine restoration or there are mutiple paint jobs you probabally don't need to strip it.
While stripping sounds like a good idea it's a lot more time and money.
and to do it right you should pull all the trim and buy good primer.
I've seen people tear apart their rides to do it right and never finish it , and thats a shame. :2cents:

I just reread your post and if you're taking about just the inside ? don't strip it , the interior paint shouldn't be weathered enough to worry about.

Cool thanks. Yeah it's just the interior at this point and it's not a concours restoration. I'm just doing mechanicals, removing the in cab tank, fixing the floors and a couple other holes inside that the PO cut for some reason.
