Gents- I have this 71 CS that came to me with an International Harvester Dana 60 rear posi/4.10.
I was thinking of swapping it out for a Ford Dana 60 from a 73 F250. Any tips on taking on this endeavor? Currently this rear seems a little wider- I will need a source for the spring perches and brackets for the shocks.
The Ford unit also has its drums frozen on pretty tight. I have not removed the axles yet to see if I can free them up- but if there is a trick to this- please let me know!
My spindles are pitted, and it is making the oil seals fail quickly. This time I polished them and filled the pitts with JB weld. I suppose I can wait and see if it holds up. So that is the reason. Plus I picked up the '73 Dana 60 just in case.. So I was going to take it apart and start the process.
I can see the benefit of changing back to a ford axle because of the ease in installation right? but a 73 axle is going to need to be modified to fit in your truck anyway since the rear of the frames are wider than the 72s, so, it really doesn't matter so much now if you find a ford axle or not because your going to have to cut and weld to make it work. you might as well contemplate any rear axle at this point or go look for a correct time period axle that will just bolt right in.

Thanks.
Um, speedi sleeves are the cure for worn oil seal surfaces. I use them all the time.
