Axle Rebuild

Post by mo-bronco »

I've searched and read quite a few of the posts on the rear axle. I'm getting ready to rebuild the axle on my '72. Is there a complete rebuild kit available? Bearings, seals, drum brakes etc? I've never done this before and I really don't plan on messing with the gearing for right now. I used the decoder on this site and figured out that it's number 3330 with 3.25 gearing. I'm redoing the whole truck and plan on replacing anything that could be worn out. Any advice?

Is it an F100 or an F250? What type of rear end, Dana or Ford 9"? You need to present a little more info. Rebuild kits are available for some applications, the Bronco Graveyard is one source.

It's an F100. Not sure about the rear end. Factory, so I'm guessing the 9"? I've bought a lot of things from Bronco graveyard and like them. I've had 9 early Broncos and a '73 is my daily driver. I may give them a try. Thanks.

You can get bearings from about anywhere....getting them pressed off and back on is the pain. I had to cut mine off with a torch....press wouldn't touch them

Ok, now a new question. I've been going by my Chilton's manual, but can't seem to get the axles to pull out. I'm using a slide hammer type axle puller. I can't see anyplace else where it would be bolted in. Am I missing something?

I just did a full rebuild on my rear axle (71 F100 Sport Custom, 2WD). I was able to purchase the ring and pinion gears (Yukon) and Timken bearings (there are five bearings in a standard 9 inch third member) from a supplier on Ebay. With shipping, I paid a total of $200.

As far as pulling the axle, I'm a little confused about what you have typed. But that may be because you're working on a Bronco (right?). For the F100, I simply removed the four bolts over the axle flange (just behind the braking mecahnism---but in front of the backplate for the brakes), and gave the axle a tug. Both sides slid right out.

Nope, I'm working on my F100. I've since heard from others that they can be tough to pull sometimes. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but the truck hasn't been run since about 1997. I found a bearing re-build kit from my local NAPA for about the same price with tax. I was looking at all of the after-market vendors when I decided to check them.

I haven't bought it yet, but that's the direction I'm leaning toward. If I can get the axles out this weekend!
