Which C-6?

Post by roughneck »

:help: I am going through a major re-do on my 69 F100, and one of the big things I want to do is get rid of the 4 speed manual trans and add a C-6. the engine is a 352 out of a 66 F100 that sadly saw its glory days come and go. I know i'll need a bellhousing to fit the FE block, my question is do I need a short or long tail shaft trans? Thanks, Rob.

I'd look for a short tail shaft C6 for ease of application if it were my truck.

Find a '68 through '76 F series truck that has an FE with C6 attached. Get the trans, trans cross member (manual trans applications are different), speedometer cable, vacuum modulator hard line, kick down rod, trans cooler lines, correct radiator with trans cooler at bottom, correct carb with kick down attachment linkage and every nut, bolt and bracket that's attached or is part of the application you should be good to go.

Some '73 to '76 F series LWB, FE/C6 trucks do have single piece drive shafts so look for the correct drive shaft as well. Best bet is a Bump application.

Guess I'm assuming you have a LWB truck with two piece drive shaft, so that'll have to be delt with as well if your truck is a SWB. No experience myself with this swap in a SWB.

Thanks. I have a SWB, and figure once I get the engine trans back in I can measure what I need and have the current driveshaft cutdown. Theres a guy locally that can cut it to length and smooth welds and makes it look nice, all for about $65.

Hell, I hadn't even thought about the kickdown, or replacing the radiator. But I was going to replace the radiator anyways, since the one in the truck is 43 years old. It doesn't leak, but I'm sure it's got some nasty build up after all those years.

You will also need a steering column for an automatic.

I have been drooling over the chrome steering columns from Flaming River. But, I'll probbably just get one from a donor truck. Oh why can't I win the lottery?
