Does anyone know what it feels like going down the road with a bad pinion bearing? My `72 kinda feels like running over a rumble strip in the road or kinda like snow chains on wet pavement, but on deceleration only.

A bad pinion bearing will emit a constant growling noise relative to your vehicle speed...The explanation that you have given sounds like something else.........please explain in more detail.........An axle bearing , MAYBE??????....................Donnie

Check the U-joints.

I think more info is needed. Is it 2wd or 4x4 and is it a short bed or long bed. Another guy had issues with vibrations on a 4x4 from the transfer case bushings. May also be the u joints or the hanger bearing. Also is it manual or auto? If its a manual does it make the noise with clutch in or out or both on deceleration?

Sorry about the lack of info. She`s a 2wd long bed. I did an axle flip. checked the 90 wieght in rear end, it`s full. rechecked pinion angle, it`s at 3 degrees down. U joints are good. End play at axles is o.k. Carrier bearing is good. BUUUTT, I jacked the back up so tires were off the ground, started engine and put `er in drive. I looked underneth and front of rear drive shaft section is wobbling so it looks like I somehow bent the driveshaft or the sliding part that goes to the carrier bearing. It started doing this after a hard left turn under power. i.e. full throttle. It doesn`t make scence to meI`m going to my local Pick & Pull today(they have 5-6 bumps) and get shaft throw u joints at it and swap it out. That should take the guess work out of the equation.

You guys were right again. Couldn`t find another shaft. So I pulled mine out and wouldn`t ya know it? The front ujoint for rear section was dry as a bone and bound up. Replace all 3 and she`s as smooth as a baby`s butt to 80 mph. Thanks again for the input.

. Been there done that. Those hard turns under power will do it every time!

Glad you got it fixed & she didn't come apart on you. I dropped a driveshaft in my '91 Jeep going down the road at 30 mph once & sh*t got crazy REAL fast. I could only imagine what would have happened if I would have been on the highway !
